Neil Cavuto: Winter Disproves Climate Change

Science

Neil Cavuto is an absolute fool. There should be no doubting that he is seriously ignorant. But the stunning idiocy he has recently spewed for his anti-science screed against action on climate change cannot be dismissed as usual.

[Think Progress] For the past week, Fox News host Neil Cavuto has been giving a daily “Fox News global warming alert,” which consists of him telling viewers how cold it is. “It is still cold,” Cavuto said yesterday, adding that it’s “not your recent garden variety global warming.” “It’s freezing across the entire globe,” Cavuto shouted on Saturday.

Neil Cavuto does not seem to understand seasons. It is winter north of the equator, you stupid monkey, of course it's cold! Nothing about the regular progression of the seasons disproves the science of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). And I very much doubt that the 80 degrees in Sydney today would be considered 'freezing'. Dumbass.

Seasonal temperature variations are caused by the tilt of the Earth's axis.

The seasons result from the Earth's axis being tilted to its orbital plane; it deviates by an angle of approximately 23.5 degrees. Thus, at any given time during summer or winter, one part of the planet is more directly exposed to the rays of the Sun (see Fig. 1). This exposure alternates as the Earth revolves in its orbit. Therefore, at any given time, regardless of season, the northern and southern hemispheres experience opposite seasons.

So, that's the science of winter, Neil. Winter makes it cold here in the northern hemisphere. Australia, South America, and much of Africa are actually quite warm this time of year, kind of like it is warm here in the summer. In fact, many places, even here in the US are experiencing temperatures that are higher than normal.

Sorry, I should define 'normal' because that would require some knowledge of statistics, of which I'm sure Neil is bereft. You see, Neil, we define 'normal' by what we expect the temperature to be. Meteorologists make predictions about this on a daily basis using information from the past. What temperature was it last year? How about the year before that? With that sort of information, which has been gathered for many years, we can spot trends in the temperature. That is, if we plotted the temperatures on a graph, would the line connecting all the dots trend upward or downward?

NASA provides some wonderful graphs to ease the work of looking it up. You should try that sometime, Neil Cavuto; look it up.
